South Florida

South Florida can be easily split into three main areas of interest. First, all down the east coast we have the main built up area stretching from West Palm Beach down through Fort Lauderdale to Miami. This is where the vast majority of the population is located and also a location that many millions of holiday makers choose to visit each year. It is also a convenient starting point to visit the other two main areas down here, the Everglades and the Florida Keys.

The Everglades are one of the natural worlds most remarkable ecosystems and cover a vast area of the southern part of Florida. From your car window as you drive through this area on the Highway all you will see is a completely flat plain covered in sawgrass, just broken by the occasional small pocket of trees,  stretching all the way to the horizon. On first sight the Everglades don't look very exciting, but if you like nature and are prepared to spend some time here, you will discover some of the natural wonders that this place contains.

The Florida Keys are a hundred mile string of small islands running from the south-eastern corner of the state to within just ninety miles of Cuba all connected by one long road, Hwy 1. If you like watersports, fishing or scuba diving this is the place to come. And of course there are those famous sunsets, down where the road ends at Key West.

The holiday season and climate here are different to the Orlando area with high season being during the winter months. During summer it can get unbearably hot and humid and the Everglade areas become very unpleasant due to the hordes of biting mosquitoes and flooding due to the frequent storms. The prices for hotels etc reflect these seasons with summer being cheapest and winter more expensive.

Let's look in detail at these three main areas:-
